On Saturday I went to my local AT&T store to buy my son his first cell phone. I’ve used this space to complain about bad customer service in the past, but today I come to praise the good people at my local AT&T store. They were friendly and helpful and gave me a good deal.
I got my son the Sony Ericsson 580i, a nice little slider phone which doubles as an MP3 player and includes a generous 2 megapixel camera. I got my son’s in hunter green and it cost $30 after a $20 discount and $50 mail-in rebate. When I walked in, I have to admit I had my doubts when two sales people were walking out on break and the rest of the crew was in the back room chatting, leaving the showroom floor empty. I had to actually walk to the back room door and ask for help, but after that the experience was great.
First of all, I knew what I wanted after a scouting mission a couple of weeks earlier. The sales person offered me a Sony 1GB memory card with a 25 percent discount (Of course Sony uses proprietary memory). I took that deal. Next, he gave me 15 percent off my current bill. Nice. He installed the SIM card and the memory card and someone even filled out the rebate slip for me, so all I have to do is cut the serial number from the box and drop it in the mail. How great is that?
All in all a terrific experience and best of all? He’s absolutely in love with this phone. We’ll see how it goes when I get my new iPhone next month, but kudos to the staff. They were incredible.

Personally I like Sony Ericcson phones better than Nokia. With Nokia, they always have a new model coming out at least like every other month, so you "new phone" may not as hot and hip like you thought when you bought it. Just a thought.
